I think, I can tell. According to what you can see (well, you get
accustomed to the blinking Rx/Tx-LEDs once you know what gets send [in
this case the modem initialization string]) and what you can read in 
mgetty's logfile, mgetty lowers DTR, raises it again and sends its
AT-Initstring and waits for response, that never comes. Then there's the
alarm and you get an "timeout in chat script", bumm.
