   In your case, I'd suspect you didn't have HUPCL on, CLOCAL was on or
   something like that.  If CLOCAL is on, a carrier drop won't be noticed
   by the computer.

I must admit that I don't know nuttin' about this
serial interface stuff. I didn't do anything but let
mgetty run. However, there was some SLIP dialin traffic
before the yesterday crash but this error occured
virtually regularly before I ever started SLIPping.

Doesn't mgetty set the flags to HUPCL and -CLOCAL in
tio_mode_sane() (018)? AIX `slattach' requires -CLOCAL,
HUPCL but I am not sure what Linux's `dip' does.
