After a few thoughts I can definitely tell that there were many (yes)
dialin attempts during the night (periodic admin scripts from some
clients' machines) and none came through, only after power cycling the
modem mgetty could speak to the modem again and thus accept the incoming
messages (there are at least 3 call-in attempts during the night, normally
there are 6)

What Gert said applies to me, too, no EDR, no CNT.

This makes things different, I will happily try calling the modem( and
telling it sweet things to get it back to work).
