problems making data connections with vgetty

Hello. I'm using a Sportster with vgetty - the voice parts work
fine but I can not make a data connection. I read that hitting one
number during the out going message will cause vgetty to make a data
connection but it fails for me regardless of wether I do this or
not. The modem hangs up the line right after I hit a number and then
vgetty sits there waiting for `connect' until it times out.
If I run just mgetty the connection works fine.

To me, it's always a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when
