After checking Gert's suggestions, you will want to watch the dial
closely, and if the ppp dialer has trouble grabbing the modem you want to
add a line to your chat script to "tickle" the modem once, then begin the
dial. I added an extra ATZ to the send portion of the script. It was
necessary in order to make the thing dial. I use a Zoom V.34i I think, and
it just needed a little help getting free from mgetty and attached to
pppd.
