This is definitely the problem. Thanks for sending the log file.

Now, as I don't know the vgetty internals well enough, we all have to wait
for Marc to comment on that -- Marc, is this a vgetty bug? Or a modem
weirdness? Looks like the AT command echo is confusing vgetty?!
