faxing pcl files

Hi. I'm running mgetty+sendfax 1.0.0 on a Redhat 5 machine. My problem is
with converting pcl files to G3. I know this isn't specifically a
mgetty+sendfax problem, but I was hoping someone here could lend assistance.

I've tried the hp2pbm package, but it isn't working for me. Any pcl file
that contains bold text (which most of our's do) gets completely screwed
up. Starting with the first bolded word, the text in the resulting G3 file
seems to be compressed into a smaller point size. This makes the fax look
sloppy because the text is a mixture of correct text and small text.
Running the hp2hig3 conversion with the -v (verbose) option reveals that
the converter is correctly identifying the bold and end or bold escape
codes, but the resulting G3 looks all wrong.

The hp2pbm references in the alt.text faq suggest that Ghostscript can be
used to convert pcl to G3, but two days of trying have got me nowhere.

I would be most grateful to anyone who can shed some light on this
situation for me.

ps. as an aside, using the hp2pbm package to output postscript also works
improperly for me, as all text is written on a single line in the resulting
postscript.
