I was indeed able to reproduce the bug on my local Solaris machine; it looks
like it was some kind of nasty memory-smash bug.  I've fixed a number of leaks
and other memory-nastiness bugs in 1.8.0alpha3, and that appears to have fixed
this problem as well.  Expect alpha3's release later today.
