It may be true that harassment is more likely to occur in purely social 
moos, but one of the worst recent cases of harassment happened in one of 
the more purely educational moos.  I advise my students not to give their 
email address out to people they meet over the net and that includes 
educational sites.  After all, some of the least savory people I know are 
my felllow academics.
